Meknes ( 梅克内斯 )

Meknes was the capital of Morocco before it was relocated to Marrakech.  Of the four imperial cities, Meknes is the most modest by far - than either Rabat, trendy tourist Marrakech or the ancient medina of Fes.  Quieter and more relaxed, yet it still has all the interesting winding narrow medina streets and grand buildings.  People are polite and drivers in general are more courteous on the roads.  Meknes is also the only city in Morocco that preserves the art of damascene, an artisanal technique that consists of embedding silver on a surface of metal before making decorative products.  Like many traditional crafts, it involves a labor intensive process.
