As a port city on the Moroccan Atlantic coast, Essaouira offers an experience of relaxation in the sea air. Eighteen-century seafront ramparts, called the Skala de la Kasbah, which were designed by European engineers, protect the sea front of the medina (old town) with old brass cannons. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along the beach, watching activities in the busy fishing harbour, while seagulls soar in the sky above. The town also has a flourishing art scene, with galleries and handicraft shops lining the sides of the streets.
The medina of Essouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
